Hole in the Wall, Transkei
Wild Coast
Eastern Cape, South Africa
The whole experience is rather awe-inspiring. Mind the pun. You can park at The Hole in the Wall Resort, and stock up on snacks and refreshments there, before heading down the trail to the beach.
The beach has a silence to it, with occasional swimmers and hikers passing by. You may also be offered some fresh fish, caught by the locals. But otherwise its a remarkably vast and open area, a remote and beautiful area. The view of the massive rock/mountain/arch is incredible! The sea is a magnificent turquoise blue, with calm spots to splash and swims.
You can do a rocky ramble to the actual Hole in the Wall, during low tide. Its enormity is mind blowing, the sea is deep there and the force of the water crashing through the hole is exhilarating. And if you look through, there are dolphins that dive up and down as they pass.
When you go back to the parking lot, the hotel bar and restaurant is VERY appealing after a full day in the sun and sea. There are ladies selling beaded jewellery at the gate, pretty gifts for yourself or family. And a really great way to financially support the local community, by appreciating their efforts and handy work.
Fantastic accommodation in a traditional rondawel, at The Real Kei, Matputzi
