Kamp Skeurklip, Orange Free State
Harrismith/Verkykerskop, Orange Free State
Campsite on private property, in a remote location. Definitely off-the-beaten track. It's far out, somewhere between Harrismith and Verkykerskop, but not close to either of them. A small campsite suitable for a few people.
The Skeurklip is a gigantic tooth shaped rock, it is a bit of a hike as it unmarked and you will need to scramble through bushes to get up the hill. Hiking here is only recommended for seasoned hikers. You will need to visually mark where you started, so as not to detour too far on your way back down.
There is an absolute silence on the slopes which is surreal and extremely grounding. We saw no animals par a couple birds. Reaching the summit, and hiking along the thin ridge was extremely humbling, as you can see far in a full 360 degrees. The cliff on the other side is sheer and absolutely enormous. Definitely worth every effort.
Wild Gallivanting visited during the winter, but the sunny day was really beautiful, early braai in the sheltered lapa. Finishing a marvellous winter day with a donkey boiler shower (make a fire to heat the water, about an hour in advance). Going prepared for cold made the comfort quite pleasant and easy enough.
