Die Gruis - Franskraal
Uilkraalsmond
Walker Bay Nature Reserve, Western Cape
Largely impressive and bright white sand dunes, pearly white beaches and crystal clear turquoise sea water.
There is not much information available about this nature reserve and it is only busy with "big time" fisherman, otherwise the beaches are really quiet. The road is right on the coastline and occasionally visitors will drive by. The Cape Nature entrance is just to the right, once you have left Franskraal and driven over the lagoon bridge. There is an entrance fee, and only high clearance/4x4 vehicles are able to drive through the reserve.
The road next to the beaches is made, naturally, of pebbles from the sea. And some of the beaches consist only of pebbles. An extraordinary place, that is peaceful and feels like a proper wild gallivant, although not too far out of town.
Please take a bag or two for any litter you may find has washed up from the sea. Any little bit of effort helps!
If you plant to go fishing, please remember you have to have a fishing permit to fish anywhere in South Africa.
Also, don't attempt to drive from Pearly Beach side, you will be fined R2500. And supporting the conservation of the nature reserve is a far better deal.
