The incredible stone walls of the Swartberg pass

Swartberg Pass, Klein Karoo

R328, Swartberg Mountains, Western Cape

Driving from Outshoorn to Prince Albert

Stopping over and with a well planned detour at Gamkas Kloof Nature Reserve. The views are so spectacular and the rock formations so interesting that you will probably need extra time for all the stopping, for photos or just enjoying it as much as you can. And if you are planning on going to Die Hel, then give yourself extra time, because that is a very long road you need to arrive before sun down.

Swartberg pass was built by hand, by prisoners, around 1880. Reading all the history before doing the road trip adds awe to the whole experience, it must been one-hell-of-a-job and its is absolutely mind boggling. You can read about the history of Swartberg Pass on the Swartberg Circle Route website.
